The COVID-19 crisis is escalating quickly. You can help. Your gift today will make sure local families facing homelessness and hunger get help to meet basic needs during the crisis.

Many of you have been quick to realize that widespread closure of schools and businesses will especially impact low-income families.

  • Hourly workers will not get paid if their places of employment shut down.
  • Parents whose income is interrupted will not be able to pay for basic things like housing and food.
  • Parents will miss work if they have no child care and the schools are closed for weeks.
  • Children who count on free school lunch and breakfast may not get enough to eat while schools are closed.

We have been touched by all of you who have reached out and want to do something to help families at SOS. We DO anticipate increased demand for SOS services.

Your donation to SOS today can help us meet the increased need for basics such as housing and food in the weeks ahead.

One local mom in Ypsilanti shared with us that she is worried. She is a single mom and works as a waitress. She does not have any paid sick time. Now her son’s school has closed and she doesn’t know who will look after him so she can keep working. She’s worried she will lose her job. Today, many other line cooks, nurse’s aides, grocery store clerks, and babysitters have the same worries.

SOS’s food program, Resource Center, and housing programs WILL REMAIN OPEN to help this mom and other families in the same situation.

But we are counting on you to help us meet the increased need! Please make a donation today to help people who will struggle to meet basic needs because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Your gift will help parents get food in the cupboards, pay rent on time, and access personal care items they need to stay healthy – like soap and sanitizer!

You also may be scrambling today. You may be making plans for care of loved ones and setting up remote options for working and learning. Amidst so many worries, people like you are feeling concerned about families and children at SOS. Thank you for remembering them and wanting to help.

Just this morning one SOS supporter called to make a gift and said, “I am ashamed to live in a country where school closure means kids will go hungry.”

You can make sure we have a community where all children and their parents have access to the things they need to survive – like housing, food, and personal care items. A gift of just $20 dollars can go a long way to help people who are going without basic needs because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Of course, the situation is very fluid and SOS will continue to coordinate with partners to meet emerging needs. So far, we have made sure all the families in SOS housing have soap and can participate in hand washing. We will distribute pre-bagged vegetables to limit the number of hands that touch the produce during food distribution. We will keep you up to date about our response efforts as the situation continues to unfold. We also will let you know how you can help!
